Low stock and sold out badges on Shopify

Updated October 16, 2026

A low stock badge creates urgency on the products that are about to run out, and a sold out badge saves shoppers a click on products they cannot buy. Both can follow your inventory by themselves.

RuleStock (all variants) between 1 and 5→Only 3 left

Set up the Low stock badge

In MDBadgePilot, click Create badge and pick Low stock. The template contains:

  • Text: Only {stock} left, with the real number of units.
  • Condition: Stock (all variants) between 1 and 5.
  • Design: yellow pill in the bottom-left corner, away from the Sale badge.

Set up the Sold out badge

Pick the Sold out template: condition Sold out (no variant available) is yes, dark rectangle in the top-right corner. Check that your theme does not already show its own Sold out label, or hide one of the two.

Keep the badges in sync with inventory

Rules are evaluated when you save the badge, when a product is updated in Shopify, and on a full pass every hour on the Pro plan (once a day on Free).

On collection, search and product pages, the {stock} number is read by the theme from the live inventory, so the count shoppers see stays accurate.

Go further with Pro

Combine stock with sales to badge the products that sell fast and run low: Units sold over N days at least 5 AND Stock (all variants) at most 10. Up to 10 conditions per badge, with AND or OR logic.

Frequently asked questions

Which stock is used?

The total of all variants. The {stock} variable shows that total, and the badge is hidden when it is 0.

What is the difference between Sold out and stock at 0?

Sold out means no variant can be bought. Unlike Stock at most 0, it ignores products that do not track inventory, so they never show as sold out by mistake.

Can I have both badges on the Free plan?

The Free plan has 1 active badge, so pick one. The Pro plan ($7.99/month, 7-day free trial) allows unlimited badges.

Can I change the threshold?

Yes. Edit the condition, for example Stock (all variants) between 1 and 10 for a larger catalog.
